She's back!

Everyone said to expect something to happen today, and to be honest there was a part of me that was scared somehow we'd be the exception. She got her EVD drain out a few hours ago and immediately afterward a nurse helped me wash her hair and give her a sponge bath. At that point she seemed so much more comfortable and content...still a bit grumpy but much less so than before. Then...the words started coming...some I hadn't heard in days, others I hadn't heard since before surgery..."mommy, "want a cracker", "no", "puppy"...and that's just in ten minutes! I think Michael and I were about to cry with happiness, because we've missed her so much. Even though she's been physically with us it's like we haven't seen her since early Tuesday.

Just had to share the news!

It must have been so hard not to hear her little voice for so long. I cannot imagine! I am so happy to hear she is talking. We miss you guys. Give her a hug for me. XX

Sophie's Story by Elaine said...

There is just something about Day 4 post op!!! I know PT and OT are not there but you could do the same things they would do with her. It is just harder because you are emotionally wrapped up in it all. I could never push Sophie as hard as they did even though I know it was in her best interest. OT came first for about 30 minutes. She gently massaged her arms, shoulders and neck. Then she put her in a sitting position. For Sophie, it was pretty much like a newborn baby. She supported her head and had her sit up for about 5 minutes and then laid her back down. Let her rest for a few minutes and then did the same thing all over again. Sophie cried. But it wasn't a "I'm in so much pain" type of cry. I could tell she was uncomfortable and did not want to do it but I knew she was not in a lot of pain. Then a few hours later, PT came. And when she sat Sophie up, I was amazed at how strong she was already. She was able to hold her head up. Once she got Sophie in a sitting position, she moved her legs over the edge of the bed and had her stand up. Again, she gave her as much support as you would a baby. She had her stand there for a few minutes and then she had her shuffle her feet a few steps towards me. At that moment, I wrapped my arms around her so tightly and it was the most wonderful moment I had with her since the first surgery. It felt amazing to have her in my arms. After that, we sat Sophie up in bed ourselves ever so often to keep working those muscles.

I am so glad you got your baby girl back today. I know how much that must fill your heart with joy!!!

That must have been huge for you guys. You know Julia is back to her old self when she's asking for milk and puppy. First time she asks for "sauce" we'll know that she's totally back. I hope everyone is sleeping well and is in good spirits. Love you guys!
